Are You Sitting Down?
June 19, 2009
So, you wanted an update on the Thursday night double header. Here goes. Philip ended up NOT being able to play. (League commissioner overruled head coach). He was completely bummed. So was I. Oh well. It was just the first of many disappointments of the evening.
Nathanael was finally put on the line up to catch last night. He was really excited and a little nervous. It was the first game. Third inning. Nathanael was catching. He called for a fast ball. He got it. After the inning, he came over to the stands (first alert that something is not right). He asked for some ice. We happened to have a big bag ready because of Anna’s recent fall on the bleachers. I gave him the ice and asked him what was wrong. “I kind of hurt my thumb.” During the next inning, I ventured over to the dugout. The thumb was swollen and bruised and I could tell Nathanael was hurting. I told Wayland to look at it. He said, “He’s fine. Probably just jammed it or something.” Nathanael finished the first game and ended up playing the entire second game (they only had eight players last night – every man was crucial). I ended up going home early during the second game because it was literally making me ill to watch my son grimace with pain after each swing of the bat, or catch of the ball. He was playing great, by the way - even if it was killing him to do it. He had some great outs, and only struck out once during both games.
Long story short, I knew Nathanael was in pain. Even if he wouldn’t admit it to anyone else. I called the hand surgeon who we took Philip to a few short weeks ago, and he got us in first thing this morning. The verdict:

Guess he really does like pink
He broke his left thumb on the growth plate. Not fun. We go back in three weeks to make sure (you know the drill) – no movement and hopefully no surgery and need for pins!!!
I asked the doctor if there was a bigger problem here – two broken bones so close together. He blamed it all on the fast ball. I hope that’s all it is.
FULL DISCLOSURE:
I was aware of Nate’s pain as well – but he assured me he was able to go. It was quite different from both his and philip’s breaks a few weeks ago in that they could not do anything. Oh well, a mother’s intuition is always right.
A little Odessa history here – I recall Wayland going through some similar things (not getting to play when he should have in BB) and I recall the same thing plus injuries happening to another BJHS OHS friend – Josh Beard. When I read the verse about “Do not grow weary in doing good” I always think of Josh. So many times he would break a bone, or a coach would not let him play – but it did not deter Josh – he just “took it” – I see the same integrity that Wayland and Josh had back then and still have in Nate and Philip. Boy, it hacks me off to see what I call unfair, but God will use this and these young men will continue to have such integrity they will do even greater things for God – HIS plan is best.
I love you all -
Miss Pamela
Ughhh! I couldn’t believe my ears when Mom told me the other day what had happened. I actually thought for a second that she was talking about the first break a few weeks ago and that she didn’t think I knew about it.
I’m so sorry for Nate that he has to sit out once again!
Oh, and Happy Father’s Day to Wayland. You’re a great dad.
Hey Nate you showed a lot of courage and strong will to not let the pain cause you to quit. What great character and integrity you displayed for your teammates. Remember these moments later in life when things get tough. You demonstrated that you can do all things through Christ who gives you the strength. Great Job!!! Happy Father’s day Wayland.
Love you all,
David Cortez
KALEESHA, I REMEMBER THAT GUT ROLLING FEELING WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR CHILDREN ARE HURT AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE A STAND, I’VE BEEN THERE, I REMEMBER WANTING TO SHOVE A SOFT CAST INTO LANDRY’S BASKETBALL COACH’S FACE WHEN HE WAS AT BOWIE, HE HAD A BREAK IN THE GROWTH PLATE OF HIS ANKLE AND LAWRENCE AND HIS COACH THOUGHT HE WAS FAKING IT.
